Woven basket, made by the Canadian West Coast Salish peoples in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Traditionally an art practiced only by women, baskets were made for a wide variety of household uses associated with collecting, storing and cooking different foods.

These large, sturdy baskets were intended to be carried on the back and were often secured by a rope passing over the wearer's head.

Similar weaving techniques were also used to make cradles and hats for daily and ceremonial use.
