Magnificent work of popular Quebec art. Painting of a sugar bush, painted on a lignicole mushroom growing on the trees.
Popular art, that is to say art from the people, includes several sub-disciplines, including sculpture.
Popular art sculpture is practiced by many actors in all regions of Quebec, often on the margins of the main institutions related to the visual arts or the fine arts. More than a hundred artists publicly claim to practice this form of artistic expression, the majority of the time developed in a self-taught way.
Popular art sculpture is expressed in practices constantly renewed by the reappropriation by the different generations who devote themselves to it. Practitioners use new themes or are part of the continuity of tradition, adapted to regional realities and the specific materials found there, including recycled materials. The result shows a generally quite raw aesthetic.
